ICLEI member Ms. Rosy Senanayake, Hon’ble Mayor of Colombo, Sri Lanka has been appointed as one of the new board members of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM). In the Board, Ms. Senanayake will represent the South Asia region.
The GCoM unites a global coalition of over 10,000 cities and local governments and 100+ supporting partners. It serves cities and local governments by mobilizing and supporting ambitious, measurable, planned climate and energy action in their communities by working with city/regional networks, national governments, and other partners to achieve their vision.
As an ICLEI member, Colombo is already committed to making a sustainable, low-carbon, resilient, biodiverse, resource-efficient, healthy, and happy city, with a green economy and smart infrastructure through various projects and initiatives.
Through this new role at GCoM, the Colombo Mayor will help her region to achieve ambitious emissions reduction goals, and serve as an ambassador for urban climate action.
As indicated to the GCoM, the mayor aims to “mobilize bold climate action and resilience action in cities in South Asia and around the world, focusing on protecting our vulnerable communities.”
Along with Ms. Senanayake, Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds of Hobart, Australia has also been appointed as a board member, and she will be representing Oceania with similar goals and ambitions for her region.
